Employment Opportunities
Calgary HandiBus Association is accepting qualified applicants for Casual and Part-Time Operators to assist in transporting our clients throughout the City of Calgary. These positions can lead to full time driving positions within our organization.
To be considered for employment, all applicants for the Operator position must have the following:
- Must have excellent city knowledge and must know how to read and interpret a city road map.
- Must have a Class 1, 2, or 4, Alberta Drivers License.
- Must be able to provide a current Drivers Abstract covering 3 years and no more than 3 demerit points assigned.
- Must be able to provide a current Security Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Search from the City of Calgary Police Service. This can be obtained by contacting the Calgary Police Service.
- Must provide the names and phone numbers of 2 work related Supervisors and/or Managers and allow for a reference check to be conducted by a third party agency.
- Previous commercial driving experience, (taxi, bus, courier, trucking, etc.) and/or previous work experience assisting Persons with Disabilities, would be a definite asset.
After an interview:
Those applicants, who are selected, will be offered a conditional offer of employment. Two conditions are required to be met before a final offer of employment is issued. They are as follows:
- They will be required to attend and pass a 12 day paid training program. This program will provide training on various issues such as Defensive Driving Techniques, First Aid, Operation of our vehicles, Procedures for transporting People with Disabilities, Radio Protocol, and on road driving evaluations.
- Must be able to pass a Pre Employment Medical and Physical Strength Test which is provided by the Association.
Rate of pay during Training Program:
As of July 2011, the rate of pay is $10.14 per hour.
Working Conditions:
- These positions operate on shift work. The hours of operations are 5:30 AM to 12:30 AM, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
- All operators must be available to work evenings, weekends and weekdays.
- Operators may be required to work up to 10 hours over a 12 hour day, (split shift).
- Generally, Operators work 5 to 6 days consecutively with 2 days off.
- Uniforms are provided by the Association with a refundable $160.00 fee charged to the individual. This fee can be paid by a deduction from the individual’s bi-weekly pay and is refunded to the employee after one full year and 1000 hours service with the Association.
- Must become members of the Amalgamated Transit Union.
- Paid vacation as per the Association’s policies and procedures.
Casual Operators:
- Casual Operators work a maximum of 48 hours biweekly with no guarantee of hours
- Days of work are assigned on the Thursday of the preceding week.
- Hours of work is assigned by Call-Ins between 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM the previous night.
- After 1000 hours worked and 1 year’s service with the Association, partial benefits are offered. This covers $20,000.00 life insurance and $20,000.00 death/disability insurance.
Rate of pay after Training Program:
As of July 2011, the rate of pay is $18.55 per hour.
Part Time Operators:
- Part-Time Operators are guaranteed a minimum of 40 hours bi weekly and may work a maximum of 64 hours bi-weekly.
- Days of work are assigned on the Thursday of the preceding week.
- Hours of work is assigned by Call-Ins between 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM the previous night.
- After 1000 hours worked and 1 year’s service with the Association, partial benefits are offered. This covers $20,000.00 life insurance and $20,000.00 death/disability insurance.
Rate of pay after Training Program:
As of July 2011, the rate of pay is $18.55 per hour.
Permanent Full Time Operators:
- Operators usually work 40 hours per week.
- Shifts are determined by a sign on procedure three times a year.
- Operators receive full benefits which includes:
- Paid Vacation
- Pension Plan
- Basic Health Insurance which consist of Dental, Medical, Prescriptions and eyeglass coverage.
Rate of pay:
As of July 2011, the rate of pay is $22.40 to $24.02 per hour.
